Animated cave man film The Croods has fought off competition from Jack The Giant Slayer to take the top spot at the U.K. box office.

The movie, featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone, earned $8.6 million (£5.3 million) over the weekend (22-24Mar13), leaving Nicholas Hoult's new fantasy adventure trailing at two with $2.5 million (£1.5 million).

Former chart-topper Oz the Great and Powerful dropped to three with $2.1 million (£1.3 million), while Identity Thief was a close fourth - the crime comedy took just $51,156 (£31,973) less than the James Franco film.

Jude Law's psychological thriller Side Effects rounded out the top five with $975,049 (£609,406).
