The Cw Renews 'Vampire Diaries' But Which Show Faces The Axe?
The CW has certainly enjoyed a successful year and has rewarded three of its most successful shows with new seasons. The network announced on Thursday (May 3, 2012) that 'The Vampire Diaries', '90210' and 'Supernatural' had done well enough to earn lucrative renewals.
The Vampire Diaries - often dubbed the Twilight of television - had found a solid balance of darkness and romance and will enter its fourth season. The show stars Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev and takes place in the small town of Mystic Falls, which is haunted by supernatural beings. '90210' - a re-envisaging of the cult soap about rich and privileged students at the fictional West Beverly Hills High - has been renewed for its fifth season. 'Supernatural' has always been a solid ratings winner for the network, and will begin its eight season of monster hunting. Though the stars of the three shows will no doubt be celebrating this week, others may not have been so fortunate. The fate of numerous other shows is likely to be resolved in the near future, with Sarah Michelle Gellar's mystery drama 'Ringer' in danger of being axed, according to the New York Daily News. The future of action-adventure 'Nikita' is also undecided, as is the one-time ratings booster 'Gossip Girl'.
The CW network is a joint venture between CBS and Time Warner's Warner Bros. It launched at the beginning of the 2006-2007 television season.
