The Hunger Games Set For Release On 23rd March 2012
THE HUNGER GAMES, the highly anticipated new movie based on the much-loved science-fiction book by Suzanne Collins, will be released on 23rd March 2012, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The date suggests that film company Lionsgate will be looking to capitalise on the Easter holiday weekend.
The original novel introduced the character of 16-year-old 'Katniss Everdeen', who lives in a post-apocalyptic world in a country named 'Panem', which was previously North America. A powerful government working in the city of 'Capitol' holds power and the book's title refers to an annual televised event in which one boy and one girl are chosen from each district to fight each other to the death. According to publisher Scholastic, there are currently 3.3 million copies of the thriller in print in the US alone and foreign rights have been sold in 41 countries.
Fans of the book will be waiting anxiously to hear of any casting news and the role of 'Katniss' is likely to be one of the most sought after parts in Hollywood. 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld is currently the favourite to land the role after she picked up an Oscar nomination for her performance in 'True Grit' when the nominees were announced yesterday (26th January 2011).
