The much-talked-about season finale of The Walking Dead, season two, turned out to be a record breaker. The final episode in the season aired on Sunday night (March 18, 2012) and according to USA Today, drew in a staggering 9 million viewers.

This impressive total beat last season's finale (aired in December 2010) by 50 per cent and the show's producers can start work on season three, safe in the knowledge that its predecessor was the most watched show, amongst adult viewers, on the AMC network. AMC's president, Charlie Collier released a statement of praise for the makers of The Walking Dead. It read: "Congratulations to everyone associated with AMC's The Walking Dead and thank you to the fans for creating, literally, record-setting television." Los Angeles Times reported yesterday (March 19, 2012) that around 6 million of the total viewers were adults aged 18 to 49.

Fans of the show are already looking forward to season three. It looks likely that the next installment in the zombie apocalypse drama will be set in a prison and even in the absence of favorite characters like Shane and Dale, there's every likelihood that the next series will be every bit as popular as this latest record-breaker. The show's producers have already hinted that no character is indispensible, though it looks likely that Rick (played by Andrew Lincoln) is here to stay.
