British rockers The Who have vowed to honour tickets from a concert they cancelled in Rhode Island in 1979 when they return to the state next year (13) as part of a major North American tour.
On Wednesday (18Jul12), founding members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend announced plans to perform their 1973 concept album Quadrophenia in its entirety when they hit the road for a series of dates either side of Christmas (12).
The group has not returned to Providence in Rhode Island since 1979, when then-Mayor Buddy Cianci cancelled the show over safety concerns after a crowd stampede prior to The Who's gig in Cincinnati, Ohio earlier that year resulted in 11 people being trampled to death.
However, Daltrey and Townshend have promised to make it up to fans in the state by closing their 2013 tour there - at the same venue they were scheduled to play 33 years ago.
Ticket holders for the axed concert were offered refunds, but those who didn't claim their money back and still have the memorabilia to hand will finally be able to cash in their stub for a seat at the Dunkin Donuts Center when The Who come to town on 26 February (13).
The venue's general manager, Lawrence Lepore, tells the Associated Press, "Somewhere, someplace, someone's got it stashed. The question is, are they willing to give that up? If they are, we're willing to take it."
