The Purge Surges At Box Office
The "microbudgeted" (it cost $3 million to produce) The Purge appeared to defy professional predictors over the weekend. On Sunday, Universal, which is releasing it, announced that it expected it to make $36.4 million between Friday and Sunday. That would have been about twice what pundits had predicted on Friday. In fact, the movie did far exceed experts' predictions -- and also exceeded the record for an original R-rated horror flick -- but it earned about $2.3 million less on Sunday than the studio had estimated -- $34.06 million. Coming in second was Fast & Furious 6, which dropped 44 percent to $19.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $202.8 million. It edged out another film that surprised the pundits, Now You See Me, which slipped 35 percent to $19.04 million in its second weekend. That amount is more than what the experts had predicted the film would earn over its opening weekend. Coming in fourth was The Internship, which opened with $17.3 million. The critically panned movie had been expected to take in far less.
