Tom Hardy is set to star in the big screen adaptation of play 'The Long Red Road'.

The 'Dark Knight Rises' actor will reprise his role of Sam - who he portrayed in Brett C. Leonard's play in 2010 at Chicago's Goodman Theater - alongside Michael Shannon, who will play the older brother of Tom's alter-ego.

The production tells the story of alcoholic Sam, who spends his days drinking away his demons on an Indian reservation in South Dakota, but his life is turned upside down when a mystery visitor from his past arrives.

Philip Seymour Hoffman has been linked with the role of director after helming the play in 2010.

Tom currently stars as Batman's Arch Enemy Bane in 'The Dark Knight Rises' and he can next be seen playing bare-knuckle boxing bootlegger Forrest Bondurant in gritty action thriller 'Lawless'.

And while he is portraying a hard man once again, the 34-year-old star recently admitted he was interested in the feminine side of his character in the movie.

Tom - who stars alongside Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce and Gary Oldman in the forthcoming film - said: ''He does some pretty horrific things. From cutting people's testicles off to using knuckledusters. And yet this is a man who also mothers two boys, his brothers. He has to feed them, look after them, he doesn't drink. He's a carer.

''He's a specific type of man. What interested me was the female role in this guy. And what the nature of violence is to men. Non-egotistical violence, non-macho violence. Violence from within the cardigan.''
