Actor John Kerr has passed away at the age of 81.

He died of heart failure on Saturday (09Feb13) at the Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, California, according to the Associated Press.

Born in New York City, he graduated from Harvard University in Massachusetts and made his Broadway debut in Mary Coyle Chase's Bernardine in 1953.

He later played a troubled prep school student in Tea & Sympathy, and won a Tony Award and a role in the 1956 movie adaptation by the same name.

In addition, he starred in U.S. Tv shows Peyton Place, Justice, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Twelve O'Clock High and The Streets of San Francisco, as well as a big screen version of South Pacific and The Streets of San Francisco.

He last appeared in 1986's The Park Is Mine with Tommy Lee Jones, before going on to launch a career as a lawyer in Beverly Hills. He retired in 2000.
