Torn's 2008 Dui Charge Dismissed
A 2008 drink driving charge against Rip Torn has been wiped from the actor's record after he completed court-ordered alcohol education classes.
The Men In Black star, real name Elmore Rual Torn, was pulled over by police on 14 December, 2008 after he was spotted driving along the breakdown lane on a highway in Connecticut.
He failed part of a field sobriety test after giving up halfway, claiming the ground wasn't level enough, and he refused to take a breath test. He pleaded not guilty to allegations of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence and failure to drive in the proper lane.
A Connecticut judge granted Torn probation and ordered him to enrol in alcohol tutorial sessions, offering to clear the DUI count upon completion.
The case was reviewed at Bantam Superior Court on Friday (21May10) and Judge Cara Eschuck dismissed the charge after ruling the 79 year old was in compliance with the terms of his probation.
But Torn's legal problems are far from over - the actor will return to court on Tuesday (25May10) to face charges stemming from his arrest in January (10), when he was caught breaking into a Connecticut bank, clutching a revolver. The star told cops he thought the building was his home.
He pleaded not guilty to a string of offences in March (10), including carrying a pistol without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, first-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief, before checking himself into an alcohol treatment centre in New York.
