The sequel to box office sensation Iron Man will be written by actor and screenwriter Justin Theroux, it has been reported.

Theroux, a star of Mulholland Drive, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle and television series Six Feet Under, recently completed his debut screenplay Tropic Thunder, set for release this September.

And with Theroux having penned lines for Robert Downey Jr, one of the stars of Tropic Thunder, he has reportedly been signed up to write the script for Downey Jr's return to the role of Iron Man, set for an April 2010 release.

The first Iron Man film opened to a massive $101 million (£51 million) across the Atlantic earlier this year, becoming one of only ten films to ever break that barrier in its first three days on release.

And while its box office receipts were considerably smaller in the UK, the comic book movie powered to the top of the charts in its British opening weekend.

Downey Jr plays arrogant industrialist Tony Stark who fashions a mighty armoured suit after being captured by Afghan insurgents only to find that his newfound passion for defence is at odds with the deadly love of weaponry of father figure Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges).

And with Iron Man's global grosses sitting at over $570 million (£280 million) Marvel Studios quickly gave the green light to a sequel to its first self-financed film.

Downey Jr and director Jon Favreau are to return while the follow-up now has a writer attached in the form of Theroux, according to Variety.
