LATEST: U2 and SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY are among 4,500 recording artists calling for copyright on sound recordings to increase from 50 years to 95 years in the UK. The British government-commissioned Gowers Report recently recommended that copyright protection should not be extended, but British newspaper the Financial Times has published an advertisement, signed by 4,500 artists, calling for an extension. The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has campaigned for parity with the US, which switched to a 95-year limit from 50 years in 1998.

I hope U2 and McCartney and all the others do get the copyright laws extended. It isn't fair to the writers that their work loses that protection so early, so those who did nothing can then make money off their work. The copyright ought to be much longer, at least 100 years..
