Us Acts To Top Reading Billby Contributor | 21 January 2008
Attendees of this year's Reading and Leeds festivals will be treated to "three American headliners", according to organiser Melvin Benn.
Talking to BBC 6 Music, he said that three top US acts would headline the festivals, held over the August bank holiday weekend.
However Mr Benn refused to name the bands topping the bill at this year's event, which will no longer be sponsored by Carling.
"I wanted it to be - as I'm sure fans wanted it to be - slightly less corporate," he explained, citing the enviroNMEntally-friendly operating methods of the Latitude festival in Southwold, Suffolk.
"I wanted to reclaim the name Reading Festival and the name Leeds Festival. I wanted them to return to their roots, so to speak.
"I didn't want the events to be called after a sponsor. I'm not asking another sponsor to come in."
He continued: "Probably for the first time, in my memory - we're actually going with three American headliners," adding: "I'm not at liberty to let you know who they are."
But talking to NME.com, he said: "It's not a debut headline position for one of the bands, and one of them has recently headlined.
"I do know that there's quite a lot of demand for them. So I think the fans will be very, very pleased with what we've got to offer."
All three of the headliners have played the festivals before, he confirmed.
