Veronica Mars, the cult TV drama that aired on the now defunct UPN and on the CW for three seasons beginning in 2004, is about to become a movie -- thanks to the Kickstarter site. Funds began to roll in after Rob Thomas, the creator of the detective series, tweeted Wednesday morning that Warner Bros. had agreed to put the movie into production if fans would contribute $2 million to it by 11:00 p.m. on April 12. Four hours later, those fans had already agreed to put up $1 million, and by 8:55 p.m. they had reached $2 million. Today's (Thursday) Washington Post reported that other TV producers who have been trying to get new TV shows off the ground or have hoped to convert defunct ones into movies are taking notice. Thomas promised kickstarter contributors a variety of perks, depending on the size of their contributions. One person contributed $10,000 for the chance to play a waiter or waitress in the movie who would say, Your check, sir. Star Kristen Bell has agreed to record a personalized voicemail message for 44 people who contributed $500 each and to appear on camera to record personalized video messages for 50 people who put up $600 each.
