Vesta Williams, the American R&B singer best known for her 1989 hit 'Congratulations', has been found dead in her El Segundo hotel room in California. According to Tmz.com, multiple bottles of prescription pills were found in the room, although the cause of death is not yet known.
Law enforcement sources say "several bottles" of pills were found at the death scene - some were empty. Officials first received a call relating to the death around 6pm on Thursday evening (22nd September 2011). Currently, the death is being treated as either an accident or suicide, but homicide has been ruled out. The official cause will not be determined until toxicology reports are in, which could take up to 6 weeks. The singer was perhaps best known for 'Congratulations', but had six Top 10 hits on the US Billboard R&B Chart. She also appeared alongside Stephen Baldwin and Billy Zane in the 1993 western flick 'Posse'. The news has stunned some fans of the singer, including celebrities Kimora Lee Simmons, who tweeted, "What tremendous talent, great soul! 'Cuz as long as I can breathe, you'll always be the one for me!", and fellow R&B star Shanice who noted, "My friend Vesta died.I can't believe this.Rip".
Williams released her last album, 'Distant Lover', in 2007. The covers record featured hits by Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and STEVIE WONDER.
