Veteran U.S. newswoman Barbara Walters is urging fans to watch a star-studded TV special highlighting heart disease, because learning about the health problem is "a matter of life and death".
The 81 year old underwent an operation last year (10) to replace a faulty heart valve, shortly after announcing news of her condition on American TV show The View.
Walters has now fully recovered, and she's been campaigning ever since to encourage her fans to be more aware of heart disease, because she had virtually no symptoms prior to her diagnosis.
Now the TV star is hosting a special programme, which features celebrity guests including actor Robin Williams, presenter David Letterman and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who have all suffered from their own heart problems.
And Walters insists the title of the show, A Barbara Walters Special: A Matter of Life and Death, is apt - because she would "be dead" if she hadn't got herself checked out.
Speaking to CNN's Piers Morgan, she says, "It's not just, 'Hey, look at this... you're going to have to have open heart surgery'. We tell you how to prevent heart disease, we tell you the difference between the symptoms for women and men because 80 per cent of heart disease is preventable.
"We call this show 'A Matter of Life and Death'. With each of us that I've mentioned (Clinton, Letterman), it was a matter of life and death and had we not done this, or 25 years from now... we'd be dead."
The programme will air in America on Friday (04Feb11).
