Harvey Weinstein will personally appear before the MPAA ratings appeal board to ask that the NC-17 rating meted out to Blue Valentine be reduced to an R rating, Deadline.com's Pete Hammond reported on Monday. "Usually just my lawyers do the appeals," Weinstein told Hammond, "but this time I am going to." Weinstein observed that over the years The Weinstein Co. and Miramax, his former company, have been involved in many appeals but have won only a few. Hammond reported that Weinstein invited members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which hands out the Oscars), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (which hands out the Golden Globes), and members of the Screen Actors Guild to attend private screenings of Blue Valentine , imploring them to make their own decision on the film before the MPAA does so. Blue Valentine is due to be released on December 31.
