Werner Herzog is set to adapt 'Vernon God Little' for the big screen.

The German director will put his stamp on DBC Pierre's award-winning novel about Vernon, a troubled teenager who is blamed for a high school shooting in a small Texas town.

The gritty story won the Man Booker prize and Whitbread first novel award in 2003, and the Booker Prize judges described the book as a ''coruscating black comedy reflecting our alarm but also our fascination with America''.

The script will be penned by Andrew Birkin, who wrote and directed Ian McEwan's 'The Cement Garden' in 1993, Variety reports.

The project marks a return to fiction for 70-year-old director Werner, who has won numerous international awards for his film. His last fictional film was 'My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done' in 2009.

His recent projects include documentary 'Cave of Forgotten Dreams' about the Ardeche cave paintings, and 'Into the Abyss', an exploration of Texas's death row.

'Vernon God Little' has twice been adapted for the stage, most notably by The London's Young Vic theatre in 2007 when British actor and 'Merlin' star, Colin Morgan, played the lead.
