Jack White has blasted reports he has turned his back on his hometown of Detroit, Michigan - by writing a poem in honour of the city.
The White Stripes frontman moved from Michigan's Motor City to Nashville in 2006, and was later accused of making negative comments about his birthplace.
But he is now hoping the ode, entitled Courageous Dream's Concern and published in the Detroit Free Press on Sunday (06Jul08), will make clear his "feelings about the city itself, and how strong I believe it to be".
The poem reads, "Detroit, you hold what one's been seeking / Holding off the coward-armies weakling / Always rising from the ashes not returning to the earth."
White says, "The poem is the Detroit from my mind. The Detroit that is in my heart. The home that encapsulates and envelops those who are truly blessed with the experience of living within its boundaries."
It was reported by The Associated Press in 2006 that White left Detroit because he "couldn't take the negativity anymore".
But White clarifies, "Those expressions of mine have never been a representation of my feelings about Detroit the city, a town that I have strong feelings about... nor were they expressions about its citizens."
