Will Smith - Why Will Smith Really Turned Down The Django Unchained Role

Will Smith turned down the lead role in 'Django Unchained' because he wasn't the main star.

The actor was originally tapped to play the titular character - a freed slave who sets out on a mission to rescue his downtrodden slave wife - in Quentin Tarantino's Western epic, but admitted he pulled out of the movie because he didn't consider the part to be as important as Christoph Waltz's character.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he explained: ''Django wasn't the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!''

''I was like, 'No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!'''

Despite Smith perceiving Waltz's character, bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz, to be the film's lead, the actor was nominated for and went on to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at last month's Academy Awards ceremony, while Jamie Foxx - who eventually landed the role of Django - was billed as the movie's lead star.

However, it appears there are no hard feelings and Smith revealed he enjoyed watching the movie when it hit cinemas.

He said: ''I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me.''

Smith will next be seen in sci-fi blockbuster 'After Earth', which co-stars his son Jaden.
