As rumors continued to gain traction that NBC was in talks with Ryan Secrest about replacing Matt Lauer on the Today show if Lauer decides to depart at the end of his contract next year, AdWeek has noted that such a change could hasten the transformation of the morning program to "a softer, more entertainment-focused -- and ultimately more profitable -- format that is only tangentially about news." In the past, the hosts of the network morning shows have proved adept at interviewing showbiz celebrities and foreign leaders, and Lauer has sometimes been dispatched to overseas hot spots to report first-hand on crises affecting the U.S. It is difficult imagining Secrest doing the same. Nevertheless, should the Today show take on the look of say, Regis Philbin's old morning show, it will No Doubt remain under the aegis of NBC News, a broadcast news source indicated in an interview with AdWeek . "[The network morning shows] make so much money for the news division, the networks will never move them" to the entertainment division, the source said.
