Star Trek icon William Shatner has apologised for crude remarks he made about an English seaside resort during an appearance on a British satirical TV news show last month (May12).
The veteran actor took the presenter's chair on the Bbc's Have I Got News for You and during a segment about the Olympic torch passing through Devon, south-west England he mispronounced the parish of Ilfracombe, prompting panellist Charlie Brooker to tell the star his words sounded "deeply sexual".
Shatner then quipped, "The place is laced with prostitution" - but his comment was ill-received by local official Paul Crabb, who wrote to the star expressing his dismay and inviting him to the area.
Now the actor has responded to Crabb, explaining his remarks and apologising for any offence caused.
In an email, he writes, "(Prostitution) commonly means sex for something of value. I would be hard pressed to believe that sex was not being had in Ilfracombe for something of value, perhaps a lengthy marriage, children or a valuable career.
"In any event, my apologies for having singled out Ilfracombe as a potential haven for prostitution. With you overseeing, I am sure that will not happen."
Shatner's appearance on the show has previously been mired in controversy - a British Member of Parliament (MP) lodged a complaint with the Bbc and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission over a comment a panellist made about the English city of Truro during an exchange with the legendary actor.
