British singer Newton Faulkner was told by record bosses he'd fail unless he cut off his red dreadlocks.
The 22-year-old refused and triumphed in the face of adversity on Sunday (26Aug07) when his album Hand Built By Robots topped the U.K. album chart.
The star - real name Sam Newton Battenberg Faulkner - reveals, "When I signed my publishing deal about three or four years ago there were concerns about my image.
"I was told I should cut my hair, but it was more of a warning really.
"There was no way I was going to cut off my hair. Fortunately nowadays individuality is celebrated - look at Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse."
