Beyond the Sea - The Very Best Of Bobby Darin

Released July 19th on Warner Music (Catalogue number: WSMCD183)

There is no question that if Bobby Darin were still alive today, he would be an enormous star, alongside Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams and other 50’s Rat Packers. But what made Darin different was his incredible diversity. Beyond The Sea – The Very Best Of Bobby Darin is a brand new collection of this sometimes overlooked icon of the 50’s and 60’s.

Beyond the Sea - The Very Best Of Bobby Darin

During his all too brief career, Darin had rock n' roll hits including Splish Splash and Dream Lover (number 1 and number 18 in the UK charts respectively) and classic versions of Mack The Knife and Beyond The Sea (charting at 1 and 8 respectively). He also touched on country, folk and show tunes on the way. His version of Guys And Dolls gives Frank a serious run for his money, and Don't Rain On My Parade swings as well as anything from Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr or any of the 50’s legends that were Darin’s contemporaries. All these and more are contained on this classic retrospective.

Darin was rarely out of the UK charts between 1958 and 1966, during which time he enjoyed a total of 22 top 50 hits. This awesome run was helped out by the fact that Splish Splash, Mack The Knife, Bill Bailey and Beyond The Sea collectively charted and re-charted 9 times during this period. In 1966 Darin enjoyed his last top 10 UK hit with yet another change in style. If I Were A Carpenter was a soft, folky ballad that showed he was as at home with a gentle, understated vocal as he was belting out the show tunes that he loved. Bobby Darin died of a heart attack aged 37, but in those 37 years he achieved more than most people do in a lifetime.
