Carnaby Street is swinging again

Carbon launched their flag ship record store last week with a line up of some the UK’s most exciting live acts and Dj’s.

The two storey, 3000 sq ft shop in Kingly Court, Soho was the venue for a four day launch week which kicked off on 12th June with a VIP only night. Guests were invited to enjoy the laid back environment of the store whilst being treated to an acoustic set by singer songwriter Dylan Rippon before the heat was turned up on a perfect summer night with sets by Carbon’s own Chris Tubbs, Bent and the man fittingly known as one of the true Superstar DJ’s; Sasha.

Having Sasha perform his emotive musical talents at a launch night is typical of Carbon who are respected throughout the dance industry as cutting edge taste makers, dedicated to finding and breaking new music and introducing it to the public in a friendly and enjoyable way.

The new Kingly Court store however is a beautifully designed and set out store carrying all genres of music. Customers and browsers alike are invited to visit the store and discover new music for themselves in four simple genres, "Guitars" including indie, rock, country, blues "U Got Soul" - hip hop, rnb, soul, reggae, funk "Just Chillin" - lounge, electronica, jazz and "Good Times" - house, breaks, electro, disco

Keeping true to their mission of mixing big names with cutting edge tracks and new sounds was clearly the theme of the Carbon launch week, with artists performing in store throughout the weekend of opening. Highlights included Simian, Nextmen, Sneaker Pimps and the awesome live set from Fat Freddy’s Drop one of New Zealands’ hottest and original live acts, mixing their own original rhythms with jazz, soul and funk.

Jon Lee of Carbon say’s: “We were delighted with the response we’ve had from all types of customer, we’ve had a great reaction to the live in store’s we’ve put on and we’re already putting together a schedule of live events to take us through to the end of the year. We want people to feel they can take their time to FIND new music in Carbon, we have a trained team of staff to direct people to their tastes but discovering new music for yourself is key and we want to make sure people are entertained whilst they’re looking!

We are now introducing an innovation called Musikube which enables all shoppers to scan any product in store and listen to the music using a hand held device to help people shop. We’re intent on revolutionising the way people think about music / dvd retail and the cattle market mentality and we won’t stop innovating and entertaining whilst we’ re doing it.”

Carbon can also be found within Urban Outfitters in London, Dublin and Glagow and will soon be opening up all over the country both within Urban Outfitter stores and coming soon, within one of the UK’s leading retail chains.

As MTV and Radio 1’s own Zane Lowe say’s:

"Carbon are offering music lovers a much more discerning and pleasurable experience."

Madonna: "I do go to (Carbon in) Urban Out fitters every weekend to hear what's really going on." (Mixmag 03/00)

Tubbs releases 5 Day Night on Carbon Records on the 14th July 03.
