LEBATOL
FOUR BY NINETY FOUR
(FUNCTION RECORDS 03/11/03).

A debut album with a difference is what the London four piece are attempting to win over the sometimes stubborn music loving public with. How often when you are telling someone about an exciting new band do they reply: “What type of music are they?” and often dismiss a band out of hand if they don’t fit into their favourite category? This merely makes the task of describing the lacerating London based band harder. They can, at times, offer a sheer in your face Raging Speedhorn style like in ‘Mission Statement’, at the other end of the scale some tracks have a laid back, maudlin Staind feel to them like ‘Circo Russo’ and the impartial ‘Ombudsman’. Overall the closest comparison would be to the likes of Husker Du and Seafood.

LEBATOL: FOUR BY NINETY FOUR (FUNCTION RECORDS 03/11/03). Album Review

Unfortunately, one of the London quartet’s song titles sums up the fate of many bands that make their lizard like attempts to destroy pigeon holing; ‘Disappear Here’. Shane Billingham has a neat vocal diversity that gives authenticity to each track, being able to pull off the loud and robust songs as well as Johnathon Davis, but can sound tender and emotive when needed. Lebatol have thrown down the gauntlet. Will the music loving public be open minded enough to pick it up? Then shove it in Justin Hawkins’ mouth, or any other part of him that they see fit? band and churning out predictable same style songs one after the other, ten out of ten for effort.
