Oscar-winning actor Paul Scofield has died after a long battle with leukaemia. He was 86. The English star of stage and screen passed away on Thursday (20Mar08). His agent Rosalind Chatto says, "He had leukaemia and had not been well for some time." Famed for his distinctive voice, Scofield won an Academy Award and a BAFTA for his role as Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons in 1967. He rejected the offer of a knighthood on three occasions, but was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of The British Empire in 1956 and became a Companion of Honour). Scofield leaves a wife, actress Joy Parker, and two children.

Maggs and Jon's picture

Maggs and Jon

A few years ago having accept an invitation to Jon Fielder's production of his musical Tolpuddle,at Warden Park School in Cuckfield Paul and Joy came and sat in the front row. There was a dance on stage in the show and a pupil grabbed Paul's hand and he gladly joined in the dance. Afterwards he said to us " I love her!!" we told him that she had had no idea who he was and he said laughing "that's WHY I love her! ". Paul and Joy also gave a poetry reading at Balcombe School to help raise funds for a new school library. We particularly remember "The diary of the Church Mouse " You will notice that all the memories of Paul and Joy are of them doing things together. They were a devoted couple, after all Joy gave up her stage career to look after Paul and supported him in everything he did which helped to make him truly "The Man for all Seasons". Our thoughts and prayers are with Joy and the family.
