Troubled British rocker Pete Doherty is planning to stage a series of fundraising gigs to help other drug addicts after he leaves the Thai rehab clinic where he is battling heroin addiction.

The Libertines star has written a candid essay for British newspaper The Independent in which he opens up about his experiences while getting clean and his hopes for the future.

Doherty is convinced his current stint at the Hope Rehab Centre in Thailand will help him kick drugs for good after years of addiction, and he wants to encourage fellow users to get help.

He writes, "Compared to other rehab centres, Hope isn't expensive. But some people with drug problems live day-to-day from hand to mouth. This is why, once I'm a bit further along in my recovery, I'm going to do a few shows to raise money for people who really want to get clean and need this treatment... To anyone struggling with addiction, I would say this: just hang on, hang on. There is a way out. You will heal. I don't care how much damage you've done, you can heal. I would say ask someone for help, just get yourself along to an Na (Narcotics Anonymous) or Aa (Alcoholics Anonymous) meeting, you'll be amazed. I know I was."
