Peter Alexander - Austrian Star Alexander Dies
Austrian actor Peter Alexander had died at the age of 84.
The star passed away on Saturday (12Feb11), his spokesperson confirms to the Associated Press. No further details about his death were released as WENN went to press.
Alexander, who served in World War II, became popular in the 1950s and 1960s with numerous roles in German musical films.
He moved into TV and hosted his own music programme, Die Peter Alexander Show, which was broadcast in black and white from 1963 till 1966. From 1969 until 1996, it was aired in colour in Germany and was seen by more than 38 million viewers.
Alexander also recorded more than 120 records and was known as 'Peter the Great' by his fans.
Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann lauded Alexander as a "great Austrian", adding: "As an artist, Peter Alexander made generations of people happy - both at home and abroad."
Culture Minister Claudia Schmied says, "Austria is losing a great actor, singer and entertainer."
Alexander is survived by his son Michael and two grandchildren.
