British director Peter Greenaway will be honoured for his contribution to cinema at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards on Sunday (16Feb14).

The Draughtsman's Contract moviemaker, who famously declared "cinema is dead" in 2002, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema Award at the ceremony in London.

Greenaway says in a statement, "Everyone agrees that cinema is changing its characteristics very fast and to be awarded a Bafta for trying to contribute to that change is a pleasure and a delight, an encouragement and an acknowledgement that the effort is valuable, certainly for myself and certainly for all those numerous collaborators who have assisted me in this effort over more than 30 years."

The writer and director has created short films, documentaries and feature-length movies since the 1960s. He was awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Cbe) medal in 2007 for his services to film.
