British journalist-turned-TV-personality Piers Morgan is crediting Simon Cowell's tears with helping him land a multi-million dollar U.S. deal to take over from beloved TV newsman Larry King.
Morgan was announced as King's CNN replacement last year (10), and he feels sure he secured the job after sending TV bosses a tape featuring an emotionally-charged chat with Cowell.
The former American Idol host broke down during an episode of Piers Morgan's Life Stories, telling the presenter about the "horrible, horrible time" he had following the loss of his father.
He tells Entertainment Tonight, "Let's face it, if I can make the hardest heart in the world weep, then I've got to have a chance."
Morgan has announced Oprah Winfrey will be his first guest when the new CNN show airs on 17 January (11).
