The Chinese movie market continues to rise exponentially. The official Xinhua News Agency reported today (Wednesday) that movies, both foreign and domestic, earned $2.07 billion in 2011, led by James Cameron's Avatar , which earned $210 million in China. The Chinese movie market is continuing to expand at a rate of 25 percent a year. Daily Variety reported today that the country is adding an average of eight new theaters a day, with the number of screens up 33 percent over 2010. The trade publication also reported that Russia's box office topped $1 billion for the first time in 2011, up 20 percent from the previous year. The top-grossing film of the year was Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean On Stranger Tides with $63.6 million. Somewhat surprisingly, the No. 2 film was Dreamworks Animation's Puss in Boots with $50.3 million.
