Portia De Rossi has signed up to star in the re-boot of the popular 1960s TV show The Munsters. According to yesterday's report from Deadline (June 12 2012), Portia will be playing the role of Lily Munster, the family matriarch. The role had previously been filled by Mariana Klaveno but ABC Studios would not release her from Devious Maids, so she had to forego the role.
The new Munsters series will be entitled Mockingbird Lane and will be aired on NBC. The series is being described as a "reinvention" of the original series, which featured a variety of monsters, including vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein's monster. It is expected that the series will use striking visual effects in the same vein as writer Bryan Fuller's previous series Pushing Daisies. The head of the family, Herman Muster, will be played by Jerry O'Connell. Amongst the other stars signed up for the show are Eddie Izzard, who will play Grandpa and Mason Cook, who will play the role of the 10 year old boy, Eddie. In the original series, Lily was played by Yvonne De Carlo.
Portia de Rossi, 39, is married to the talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. She previously starred alongside Calista Flockhart in Ally MCBeal, playing the role of Nelle Porter and also featured in Arrested Development, playing the role of Lindsay Bluth Funke.
