Bbc's Sound Of 2013 List Announced

The best and brightest new music acts have been voted onto the longlist for the BBC's Sound of 2013, the annual list compiled by BBC News which highlights the most exciting rising stars for the year ahead.

The list was compiled with votes from 213 influential UK tastemakers, including DJs, critics, broadcasters and bloggers, who were asked to name their three favourite new acts. The top five artists will be revealed, counting down one each day, from New Year's Eve; with the Sound of 2013 winner announced on Friday 4th January.

Previous winners have included Jessie J, Ellie Goulding and Adele. Last year's list was topped by North London soul singer, Michael Kiwanuka. This year's list of new artists range from R&B/electronica duo AlunaGeorge to LA retro pop band HAIM and post-punk band, Savages.

18 year-old pop act A*M*E has also made the list alongside 20-year old south Londoner, Arlissa - who has already recorded a single with U.S hip-hop legend Nas - and classically trained soul singer Laura Mvula, from Birmingham. Synth-pop band Chvrches, from Glasgow, will battle it out for a place in the Top five with Dublin 4-piece, Kodaline and indie-rock band Palma Violets, whose first single 'Best of Friends' was named number one in NME's Best Tracks of 2012.

Tropical-sounding indie band Peace, hailing from Birmingham and Irish country rock band, Little Green Cars are also in the Top 15, alongside 22 year-old singer songwriter Tom Odell. Native American rapper Angel Haze joins 17 year old British singer songwriter and producer, King Krule on the longlist.

Canadian alt-R&B act, The Weeknd - who has been championed by rapper Drake and remixed the likes of Florence and the Machine and Lady Gaga - completes the list.

George Ergatoudis, Head of Music, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: "The unveiling of the BBC's annual Sound Of.. list is one of the highlights of the musical calendar and this year more key tastemakers agreed to take part than ever before, sealing its reputation as the definitive guide to next year's most exciting artists. Of course not all of them will achieve success, but all are worth checking out. Let the discussion and debate begin."

Wendy Roby, Singles Editor, Drowned in Sound, said: "It's easy to be cynical about lists. It's not easy, however, to make brilliant racket like AlunaGeorge, The Weeknd and Savages. Finding music is all about gateways, connections, finding your own route through. And I think there's enough range on this list for everyone to find something to love. Or maybe just something to kick against, until you find an artist you can't wait to get tattooed on your arm, or whose band t-shirt you'll want to sleep in."

The top five acts will be announced simultaneously on the BBC News website and Sound of 2013 website. Huw Stephens will announce the final three acts, counting down to the winner, live on BBC Radio 1 each morning from Wednesday 2nd January.

Huw said: "This year's Sound of 2013 longlist is an exciting and vibrant one, which I think bodes well for the year ahead. It's always a varied list that surprises people, causes debate and speculation about the state of the music scene. For me, it's an exciting time of year, where we don't really know what the year will bring with new music, but this helps give people an indication of what might sound good."

Huw will be presenting a Sound of 2013 Special, featuring music from all of the acts on the list, on Monday night at 10pm on BBC Radio 1. A range of music, video, interviews and biographies from each of the Top 15 acts can also be seen on the BBC Sound of 2013 website

Twitter users can tweet about the list using the hashtag #soundof2013

BBC Sound of. was started in 2003 and has a history of predicting the acts who will make it big. Previous years have picked out Florence and the Machine, Klaxons, Plan B, Bloc Party and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
