Cumulus To Release Debut Album 'I Never Meant It To Be Like This' On October 1st 2013

Cumulus and Trans- Records are proud to announce the October 1st release of I Never Meant It To Be Like This. Over the past year the Seattle trio have made a name for themselves locally on the strength of their sincerely crafted guitar pop and compelling live sets. The community has embraced and rallied around them, supporting a successful kickstarter campaign the band would put to use professionally recording at Phil Elverum's studio The Unknown in Anacortes, WA, mixing the album with Sam Winston (The Lonely Forest), and mastering with TW Walsh (Pedro the Lion, Sufjan Stevens, Damien Jurado).

Originally planning to self release the album, Alexandra Niedzialkowski (vocals, guitar), Lance Umble (guitars, keyboards), and Leah Julius (bass) were just a day away from putting in an order for their first 1000 CDs when Trans- Records founder and Death Cab For Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla sent them an email expressing interest in signing them to his label. To Cumulus the change in trajectory definitely felt meant to be. "We don't have an extensive discography or one million twitter followers," explains Niedzialkowski, "so we know we are more than just a business investment to him, he really believes in us."

Niedzialkowski would truly begin to believe in her own strengths as a song writer and performer after encouragement from mentors at a Rock School summer camp she attended while in high school. She began searching for female voices to look up to, and drew inspiration from the likes of Mirah, Kimya Dawson, and Pretty Girls Make Graves among others. Following college in Bellingham, WA, Niedzialkowski moved to Seattle where she would link up with Umble, who had spent the past several years playing and touring in various other groups. Despite never playing in a band together, the two were well acquainted, having bonded years earlier in high school over shared interests and strangely similar pasts, both having been born to military families in West Germany in the mid 80s.

Soon enough the final piece of the puzzle would fall into place when Julius, knowing the band was in need of a bassist, presented herself as one even though she had never played bass in her life. Julius did have experience paying guitar and drums however, and to her the bass sounded like a compromise between the two. Julius quickly picked up the parts, and with a rhythm section in place Cumulus was able to achieve the potential of the songs as louder, fully realized compositions.
