Kindness Announces New Album 'Otherness' Feat. Robyn Plus Streams New Track 'World Restart' [Listen]

On October 13, Female Energy will release Otherness, the second LP from Kindness. Otherness accomplishes something rare for an artist in any discipline: The album finds underlying connections between a stunning diversity of antecedents and synthesizes them into something new, perhaps even timeless.

For Otherness, Kindness' Adam Bainbridge surrounded himself with fellow artists, co-writing and/or recording in cities around the world, includingRobyn, who discovered Kindness via his debut, World, You Need a Change of Mind; Kelela, whom he met through his close friends at the Night Slugs label; Ghanaian rapper M.anifest; and Devonté Hynes, a longtime friend whose 2013 breakthrough Cupid Deluxe included contributions from Bainbridge.

The album's opening track, "World Restart feat. Kelela & Ade," rides lithe and loose horns by saxophonist Finn Peters, which recall a Fela Kuti record but are tethered to a fat boogie bassline and Bainbridge's own rich percussive clatter.

Throughout Otherness, you're reminded that the music is the product of people writing and playing together in a room. It's clear in the expressive performances of Finn Peters and pianist Sam Beste, in Robyn's laughter at the end of "Who Do You Love?" and in the intimacy of the Kelela duet "Geneva."

Kindness has drawn upon an immense range of music-D'Angelo, Herbie Hancock, Prince, Sade, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Kate Bush and Ryuichi Sakamoto-to craft a seamlessly coherent set of songs that are at once raw and modern.

Otherness is the fullest realization to date of an artistic vision that Bainbridge was already beginning to articulate when he first assumed the Kindness moniker and began releasing recordings, in 2007, at the Philadelphia Institute for Advanced Study, where he was granted a residency to explore music-making. The new release delivers on the promise many have seen in Bainbridge since World, which many one of the years best albums. Otherness possesses, to an even greater degree than World, what the BBC attributed to its predecessor: "a humanity that sets [the music] apart from the brittle pristineness of modern pop" and "a sense of genuine invention that permeates the whole album."

Otherness is produced by Adam Bainbridge (Kindness) and mixed by Blue May, Jimmy Douglass and Bainbridge.
