Lang Lang To Be Awarded International Artist Of The Year At Classic Brits 2013

The BPI, the UK's recorded music association, has announced today that Chinese pianist Lang Lang will be presented with a special award at the event next Wednesday 2 October at the Royal Albert Hall. The award for International Artist of the Year will recognise Lang Lang's global success as a recording artist and performer as well as his efforts to increase the popularity of classical music and the piano. It was also confirmed today that following their performance together at the Classic BRITs in 2011 as part of the cast of Les Mis'rables, Samantha Barks and Alfie Boe will make a triumphant return for a special performance together. The event will be hosted by Myleene Klass and will be broadcast on ITV on Sunday 6 October.

Superstar pianist Lang Lang has captured the imagination of young and old around the world with his electrifying performances, prompting The Times to say: "I can think of no other classical artist who has achieved Lang Lang's broad appeal without dumbing down." He was watched by 4 billion at the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, performed at the Last Night of the Proms, the World Cup Games in Munich, the 2008 Euro Cup Closing concerts, the 2007 and 2009 Nobel Prize concerts and even invited to perform at Buckingham Palace and The White House. Lang Lang's impact on classical music is undeniable, with the world's media proclaiming him "evangelical in his efforts to spread the popularity of classical music" (Financial Times) and "the world's ambassador of the keyboard" (The New Yorker). Through his volunteer work with children he has encouraged more than 40 million Chinese children to learn to play piano.

Co-chairmen of The Classic BRIT Awards committee, Dickon Stainer, President of Decca Records and Barry McCann, Avie Records Director said: "We are proud to honour Lang Lang with the award for International Artist of the Year at this year's Classic BRIT Awards. His continuing enthusiasm, efforts and performances around the globe have helped encourage people of all ages to start playing the piano and this above all is what we hope to achieve with each Classic BRIT Awards event."

Host of the Classic BRIT Awards for the sixth consecutive year, Myleene Klass said: "The Classic BRITs does so much to bring classical music to a wider audience and I'm proud to be at the helm on the night. I'm especially excited this year as my first love, the piano is one of the stars of the show with Hans Zimmer, Lang Lang and Ludovico Einaudi all performing on it - it's such a beautiful instrument and so versatile, these classical giants will show it in all its glory."

Completing a stunning line-up for the highlight of the classical awards calendar, Samantha Barks and Alfie Boe have confirmed that they will return to the Classic BRIT Awards stage with two exclusive performances. In 2011, they made a show-stopping appearance as part of the cast of Les Mis'rables and have since gone from strength to strength. Alfie Boe performed on the balcony of Buckingham Palace as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations and Samantha Barks made her critically acclaimed movie debut as _ponine alongside Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe in the film version of Les Mis'rables. They return together at the Royal Albert Hall for a very special performance of 'Come What May' from Moulin Rouge and a rousing version of 'Glory, Glory Hallelujah'.

As previously announced, British violinist Nicola Benedetti, Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, Australian saxophonist Amy Dickson, composer and pianist Ludovico Einaudi, Chinese pianist Lang Lang and Gareth Malone & his Voices choir will also perform. In honour of his Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, Hans Zimmer will make his debut Classic BRITs performance with the London Chamber Orchestra to perform a spectacular medley accompanied by moving images of some of his greatest work.

The Classic BRIT Awards plays a major role in supporting and nurturing talent in both the core and crossover classical world. The event was established in 2000 to honour and recognise all forms of classical music from contemporary to crossover, opera to soundtracks, traditional to theatre and has continued to evolve as classical music has once again become a major seller in the music world.

The show-stopping performances and attendance of global classical superstars continues to make the Classic BRIT Awards a must see annual part of the ITV calendar.
