Windsor Festival 2013 Unveils A Rich Literary Lineup

Visitors are spoilt for choice with an eclectic mix of literary events at this year's Windsor Festival

Windsor, 30 July 2013

In a celebration of music, literature and the arts, the annual Windsor Festival will once again host an enchanting series of high quality events around Windsor's finest venues. The highly respected arts festival will be located within and around the grounds of Windsor Castle, by kind permission of Her Majesty The Queen, from 16th September - 29th September 2013.

This year, Windsor Festival presents an impressive Literary Lineup. Significant demonstrations of dedication and commitment, celebrating the Queen's Coronation and the 60 year anniversary of the conquest of Mount Everest, offer a thematic backbone to the itinerary. With 16 literary events taking place over the course of the Festival, visitors will certainly not be lacking in choice. Resonating highlights of the program include:

To kick off Windsor Festival, a Literary Lunch will be held at the Macdonald Berystede Hotel and Spa in Ascot on Monday, 16th September 2013 at 12:30pm. Well-known and experienced explorers, Robin Hanbury-Tenison and Robert Twigger, will be speaking about The Modern Explorers which they edited together. The Modern Explorers is a new collection of accounts by explorers from all over the globe which draws together vivid descriptions of a wide variety of challenging and extraordinary expeditions to the remotest parts of the world.

Max Egremont is a novelist and writer of biographies on Siegfried Sassoon and Sir Edward Spears, but his latest work, Forgotten Lands: Journeys among the ghosts of East Prussia, has been described as representing the best form of travel writing. No country embodied the turbulence of twentieth century Europe more dramatically than East Prussia: the scene of Stalin's 'terrible revenge'. Join us at the Upper School, Eton College on Wednesday, 18th September 2013 at 6.30pm to hear some astonishing stories. Travelling to the birthplace of Kant, and going on to meet survivors from the great families of East Prussia, Max Egremont will talk about his personal and profoundly moving book: an account that combines atmosphere, history and travel in an evocative mediation on identity and the passing of time.

Don't miss out on the chance to meet Sir Michael Parker, the man behind the highly entertaining autobiography 'It's All Going Terribly Wrong'. Parker will talk about his hilarious experiences as the man behind the curtain at Royal Tournaments and the Queen's Jubilees, to name but a few. He also offers his handful of rules to help put on the best possible show with the greatest possible chance of something going awry! The Accidental Showman will be held at the Guildhall on Monday, 23rd September 2013 at7pm.

Visitors are certainly in for a treat with Jambusters, where Julie Summers will be giving a heart-warming and humorous talk about the Women's Institute during the Second World War. Wonderful stories will be told of how the women of rural Britain made the countryside tick. Whether it was looking after evacuees or making jam, filling in six-fold forms for the rural pie scheme or negotiating with truculent officials about petrol, the WI got on with life, even in impossible circumstances. This unique event will take place in the special setting of The Royal Chapel, Windsor Great Park, on Saturday, 28th September 2013, at 11am. Windsor Festival welcomes all to join in for a celebration of a remarkable generation.

Martin Denny, Windsor Festival Director said: "This year's literary programme is more varied and we feel that with the broadening scope of entertainment it provides, there will be something for everyone to enjoy during the two-week event. So as summer draws to a close once again on this Royal Town, we invite you to immerse yourself in this series of enchanting events."
