Jailed Pussy Riot star Maria Alekhina has been admitted to hospital nearly a week after beginning her hunger strike.

The Russian rocker is one of two bandmembers behind bars for performing a protest song at a Moscow church last year (12), and last week (ends24May13) she announced she would be refusing to eat after she was banned from attending her parole hearing in person.

It has now emerged Alekhina has been transferred to a prison hospital.

The news was revealed in a Twitter.com message sent by Pyotr Verzilov, husband of Alekhina's bandmate Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, following his visit to the penal colony this week (beg27May13).

No more details about Alekhina's condition were available as Wenn went to press.

Alekhina previously said of her hunger strike, "I see no other way of bringing pressure on the administration to negotiate other than starving myself."

The star, who is serving out a two-year prison sentence for her hooliganism conviction, was denied parole at the hearing last week, and her bandmate Tolokonnikova also remains behind bars.

A third member of the group, Yekaterina Samutsevich, was released from prison in October (12) when her sentence was commuted.
