Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme has put himself forward for consideration to portray Star Wars robot R2-D2 in the upcoming sequel after sharing a spoof audition tape online.

The rocker joined forces with editors behind YouTube.com comedy channel Stinky Mike to shoot the funny clip, in which the singer and self-confessed "giant Star Wars fan" decides to try out for a role.

When a pretend casting assistant suggests his tall stature and ginger hair makes him more suited to audition as a Wookiee, a hairy humanoid species in the sci-fi franchise, he replies, "Dude, don't be stupid. This (body) is like, obvious R2-D2. I want to be king of the droids. (Wookiee) Chewbacca's just like, a hairy beast. I'm like, an articulate, multi-lingual do-er."

He then dons a cardboard costume in an effort to make himself look like R2-D2 for casting directors, but the audition goes drastically wrong as he crashes into a presentation board and falls over as he utters the robot's sounds, "gleep glorp".

Homme's fake audition is part of Stinky Mike's series of joke auditions for the J.J. Abrams movie, Star Wars: Episode Vii.

The rocker's audition may be a spoof, but Irish actress Saoirse Ronan revealed this week (begs30Sep13) that she really has tried out for the film, although she can't reveal anything about the much-anticipated sequel.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are expected to return to the franchise as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo, while Alex Pettyfer, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ryan Gosling, Leonardo DiCaprio, Florence Welch, Michael B. Jordan and Chloe Grace Moretz have also been linked to the cast.
