R Kelly cancelled an event in New York on Wednesday evening (June 27, 2012) over a "health emergency". The singer was scheduled to attend a book signing, though his representative told Tmz.com that he was side-lined in Chicago through ill health.
Besides the book launch, the singer was also forced to cancel appearances on the Jimmy Fallon show as well as a scheduled slot on the 'Today' show. R Kelly's representative eventually released further details of the "emergency", saying, "Initial indications are that he is suffering from complications from surgery he had last year to treat an abscess on his vocal cords". He is yet to reschedule the cancelled appearances, and his rep added, "It is unclear how long Kelly may be sidelined. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused". His autobiography 'Soulacoaster: The Diary of Me' was first announced in 2009, though it's finally released on Thursday (June 28, 2012). Publisher SmileyBooks say of the work, "With searing honesty, Kelly delivers a fascinating portrait of a gifted soul trapped in the conflicting realities of "bump and grind" sexuality and soul-stirring "I Believe I Can Fly" spirit".
One passage in the book touches upon R Kelly striking up a friendship with Tupac Shakur shortly before his death, saying, "Pac understood that we came from the same 'hood. We had mutual respect and mutual love. I'd go around saying, "No one is better at the rap game than Pac." And Pac went around saying, "Kells is the most serious R&B thug out there".
