Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea passed out in shock when music manager Malcolm McLaren tried to convert the band into a wild punk group.

The rock quartet - JACK IRONS, HILLEL SLOVAK, Anthony Kiedis and Flea real name MICHAEL BALZARY - were horrified when the former Sex Pistols manager ordered them to simplify their music and become a rebellious "back-up band" for singer Kiedis.

Kiedis recalls, "Malcolm McLaren tried to poach the whole band. He watched us rehearse, and then he said, 'OK, here's the plan guys. We're going to simplify the music completely, so it's just basic, old school, simple three-chord rock 'n' roll and we'll have Anthony be the focus of attention and you guys will be the back-up band doing this punk surf thing.' At which point Flea keeled over and passed out."
