Rapper Rhymefest has failed in his bid for public office in his native Chicago, Illinois after a closely-fought battle at the polls.
The hip-hop star, real name Che Smith, formally entered the race to become an alderman for the 20th Ward at the Chicago City Council in October (10) and his political aspirations were boosted in February (11) when superstar pal Kanye West publicly endorsed him.
He faced off against current alderman Willie Cochran when city residents went to the polls in February (11), and results released this week (begs04Apr11) reveal the rapper was narrowly beaten, with an estimated 300 votes between the two candidates.
Rhymefest is taking the loss in his stride, insisting he's pleased to have inspired youngsters with his political run.
He says, "It's not about me winning or losing, it's about hope. Eleven and 12-year-old children ask me, 'Can you stop the gang banging?' I say, 'You have to help too.'"
