Rocker Ric Ocasek and The Cars have reunited to record their first album in 23 years.
The news comes more than three months after the founding members of the Drive band teased fans with a recording studio photo posted online.
The group posted a snippet of a new song, Blue Tip, on its Facebook.com page over the weekend (15-17Oct10), but provided no additional information.
Now, the band's engineer Paul Orofino has confirmed the quartet is working on a new album at his studio in New York, revealing in a post online that keyboard player Greg Hawkes played and programmed the bass parts for new songs in the absence of The Cars' original bassist Benjamin Orr, who died in 2000.
Sources tell Billboard.com the group is strongly considering a tour, but dates have yet to be confirmed.
The Cars split in 1988 and Ocasek became a top talent executive and producer at Elektra Records.
The group came together in 2005 but Ocasek refused to be a part of a reunion tour and Elliot Easton and Hawkes hit the road instead with Todd Rundgren, Prairie Prince and Kasim Sulton as The New Cars.
