Richard Gere has heaped praise on his father as part of a new TV ad for the Meals On Wheels Association of America. The Pretty Woman star's dad, HOMER, has been delivering meals to elderly neighbours in upstate New York since he retired 18 years ago and now he has become one of the faces of the organisation after picking up the Jody Tepedino Nichilo Outstanding Volunteer Award last year (06). To honour his dad, Gere agreed to join Homer in a new public service announcement aimed at recruiting new volunteers and help them raise funds. In the new ad, the elder Gere recalls the reasons behind his decision to become a volunteer: "I retired 18 years ago and a good friend of mine said, 'Hey, Gere, what the hell are you gonna do with your time now?' The next thing I knew I was a delivery man for Meals on Wheels." And his proud son, who also appears briefly in the new commercial, adds, "To the home-bound neighbours he has delivered meals to for 18 years, my father, HOMER GERE, is the real leading man."
