The Jaipur, India judge who issued obscenity charges against Richard Gere for publicly kissing actress Shilpa Shetty has reportedly been transferred from the case.
Magistrate Dinesh Gupta, who issued an arrest order for Gere last week (ends27Apr07), will no longer be able to preside over the case following a "routine" transfer.
The move comes after Gupta came under fire for allowing Hindu extremists to cloud his judgement after they called for Gere to be punished for reportedly ignoring an Indian taboo.
Some high ranking officials claimed the arrest order had no legal merit and made the country look ridiculous.
Gupta claimed Gere's kiss at a recent AIDS awareness event was offensive to many Indians, and went so far as to call it "highly sexually erotic."
Gere has apologised for any offence he might have caused.
