British comedian Ricky Gervais insists his fame has only brought him one significant perk - getting to know his idol David Bowie.

The 43-year-old actor - star of hit British TV series and Golden GlobeS winner THE OFFICE - claims that for all his world-wide success, getting closer to the veteran rocker has to be the highlight.

He says, "The fame bit is the only downside to fame. It's almost accidental. It bores me.

"The only good side is that it's a shorthand to meet someone like David Bowie, a teenage hero of mine.

"You don't become friends with Bowie, but we've exchanged emails."

Gervais is currently teaming up with his The Office writing partner Stephen Merchant to create a new comedy show titled EXTRAS - which is set to be another huge hit.
