Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival has adopted a day-long Australian movie celebration where wannabe film-makers get the chance to air short films for thousands.

The New York City festival organisers have partnered with the founders of Australia's Tropfest to offer budding directors a chance to show off their skills.

Film-makers wishing to compete in Tribeca's first Tropfest next April (06) must make a seven-minute short featuring a New York City manhole cover.
