Robert Redford, Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola are among the Hollywood heavyweights who have added their signatures to an open letter which urges Oscars bosses to reconsider their new screener video ban.

MOTION PICTURE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA (MPAA) chiefs have decided to stop sending out videos of movies to Academy members in a bid to stamp out piracy.

But many industry experts fear that decision will ruin independent moviemakers' chances of getting nominated for an Oscar - because Academy members won't see smaller films.

The letter states, "As creative artists, we stand up for these films and oppose the MPAA's creation of an unwarranted obstacle to their reaching the audience they deserve - and of course require, in order to exist."
