A racing driver who appears in Ron Howard's new movie Rush has died in a car crash in Australia.

Brit Sean Edwards, 26, was travelling in the passenger seat of a Porsche when it smashed into a wall and exploded during a private test session at Queensland Raceway near Brisbane on Tuesday (15Oct13).

He is believed to have died on impact. The driver, a 20-year-old local man, is currently in intensive care with life-threatening injuries.

Edwards was the son of racing driver Guy Edwards, who famously pulled Austrian Formula One driver Niki Lauda from a fiery car wreck in Germany in 1976.

He played his father in Rush, which focused on the rivalry between Lauda and James Hunt. Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth portrayed the pair in the movie, which was released last month (Sep13).

A statement from the Motor Sports Association (Msa) reads, "Sean was a hugely promising young racer who came through the junior formulas in Britain, before making a career in international sportscar racing. The Msa extends its deepest sympathies to Sean's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."
