Regarding alimony and community property, if that was the only reason Hindu couples do not get divorced then we should be seeing a spate of divorces in the Hindu American community. It is not happening in the United States or in other countries because the couples try hard to solve their differences and compromise with each other. In the case of abuse, the couples should be divorced regardless of any religious affiliation.

Hindus do have a low divorce rate because they believe that couples should work on their marriage like all religions do. It has nothing to do with alimony or community property which is rubbish. Community propoerty will not bring peace or happiness. I know of parents who have stood by their daughter-in-laws when their sons have divorced them raising their grandchildren with their daughter-in-laws because their families are more important to them. They disinvited their son from family events for a long time because they felt the son's behavior was unacceptable. I know a mom and dad who tried so hard to mediate between a son and his estranged wife and were unable to help. The mom was so upset that her grand daughter would not have her family that she told her son that if he was going to get married again he better be serious about his family and work with his wife to keep that family together. In this case, it is more about celebrities using the Hindu religion as a prop for their fame, careers and headlines.

I do believe many Indians, but not all, use astrological compatibility as a primary factor in selecting a partner. In the west, selection is primarily based on passion, and of course other factors, and so a great many western marriages fizzle out within the first 10 years if not the very first. I think if you marry for religious or spiritual reasons the odds of you remining together are greatly enhanced. If you just want to f**k him/her like crazy, I'm not so sure it's gonna last so long.

"There are reasons why Hindus, as a group, have one of the lowest divorce rates in the world." Yeah, like no alimony or community property. There are many who would like to get a divorce, but the women choose to stay in an bad marriage rather than being put out on the street.
